eThekwini Ecopeace is an environmental action group.

Our urgent responsibility is to find revolutionary political solutions to our human-made social, economic, and ecological crises. To survive we must take into account our interdependence on each other and our environments.
Poor people can judge whether or not they have been provided with basic needs like food, water, clothing, affordable houses, fuel, electricity, sewers, refuse removal, a clean safe beautiful environment, cultural amenities, convenient public transport, basic health care, education and jobs.

Globalisation, and so-called economic growth do not increase employment.

The macro-economic strategy "growth employment and redistribution" (supported by all other political parties) is the wrong GEAR for the poor. Instead we must have economic development, community self-reliance and food security.

We stand for:

-Expansion of Employment Opportunities – MORE JOBS !

-Move away from our present militaristic arms based economy

-Move towards full employment

-Rates reform

-Reductions for recycling and lower use of resources

-Direct payment for services

-Radical approach to combating the HIV/AIDS genocide

-Gender relationships must be honest

-End to the persecution of sex-workers

-In compliance with the provisions of the Constitution of South Africa

-Open debate on methods to deal with drug abuse

-Anti-corruption programme

-Protection and rewarding of whistle-blowers

-Exposure of exploitation of the poor

-Why should shack dwellers pay "rents" to counselors?

-Prison reform

-Rehabilitation alternatives for economic crimes

-Creation of urban community gardens

-Local Economic Trading Systems

-Rapid change to PARTICIPATORY democracy

-Direct grass roots action is effective

-People can express their own views and create a tolerant society

Non-violence

-To create the environment within which equality and social justice can thrive; and facilitate constructive land re-distribution.

-This will involve conflict resolution, community investment and re-discovery of self worth to destroy the endless cycle of poverty and violence.

No Compromise of Human Rights

-An intense adult literacy program is a priority to achieve the protection of all basic human rights in the BILL OF RIGHTS of the Constitution.

-High rates of women’s participation are necessary. This requires special provisions to be made for pre-school child care and feeding at community level and crèche facilities at places of employment for breast-feeding mothers.

Protection of the Environment

-A healthy environment is our primary objective since without it there can be no healthy individual, no healthy society, no healthy economy, and no right left that is worthy of being protected.

-In the absence of a healthy environment, attempting to solve the problems of violence, human rights abuses, poverty etc become increasingly difficult.

-Our priorities include

-An end to pollution

-Zero waste policy -Enhancement of recycling strategies

-Halt to genetically modified frankenfoods and other organisms

-Food labeling

-No nuclear power and waste

-No importation of foreign toxic waste

-No untreated effluent sea pipelines.

-Alternate fuels and transportation programmes

Participatory Democracy and Political Integrity

-The creation of structures that will ensure true decision making by the people as opposed to decision making by individuals that control political parties.

-Expansion of the role of the internet in collective decision making, allowing greater individual participation.

-Increase awareness of, and response to the needs of the disenfranchised, including

-Children

-Immigrants, (legal and otherwise)

-Those who consciously choose to distance themselves from our undemocratic "representational" system.

-Prerequisites for nomination as an Ecopeace candidate

-Performance based remuneration as opposed to remuneration guaranteed positions; candidates will qualify for a minimum "living wage" allowance only, as a personal affirmation that political participation is but a means to a greater end, and not the end itself.

-Formal commitment to resign from their position on council should they cease to be a member of eThekwini Ecopeace.

-Candidates must fulfil the performance requirements of their community.
